Letters to Friends


Project aims
At the end of the project, children will:
• Have a developing respect for their own culture and beliefs and those of other people.
• Have extended their vocabulary, exploring the meaning and sounds of new words.
• Be able to link sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet.
• Be able to use their phonic knowledge to write simple regular words.
• Have explored colour, texture, shape, form and space in two dimensions.
• Have used a digital art program and a digital camera.
• Be able to use ICT to express ideas and communicate with others.

Process
Children will use a digital art package and/or a digital camera to create a series of pictures with words, illustrating the alphabet.
Each schoolwill produce pictures for alternate letters of the alphabet.
Each school will use their own language in the pictures, but teachers will collaborate to ensure they understand the meaning of the words used
Pictures will be exchanged and similarities and differences discussed.
Evaluation
The project will be complete when each school has sent a complete set of pictures illustrating the alphabet.
The criteria for success are
• Full set of pictures exchanged
• Children using digital art program and digital camera with confidence.
• Children able to link sound, letters and pictures.
• Children aware that other people speak different languages and able to say a few words in the partner language.
